Service Description
Ready to take your surface design to the next level? Designed for seasoned beginners through advanced students, this class dives deeper into creative surface methods. We’ll experiment with sgraffito, carved low-relief designs, underglaze painting, and transfers—exploring ways to add marks, texture, and color while developing your own decorative style. While the focus is on surface decoration, students will be guided through simple handbuilding methods to create small plates and tiles as canvases for experimentation. During Open Studio time, you’re encouraged to create your own forms and apply class techniques to projects of your choosing. Students who have previously taken a wheel class at RI Clay Space may use Open Studio passes to throw pieces on the wheel and bring them to class ready for surface design. Students are also welcome to handbuild pieces during Open Studio. This course includes clay, materials, access to studio tools, and five Open Studio passes—giving you plenty of extra time to make, practice and play.
